undefinedMendeley is a free reference management software and academic social network that can help you organize your research, collaborate with others online, and discover the latest research.

Using reference management software such as Mendeley helps to manage the citations and document them consistently without having to worry about the different formatting requirements for the citation style being used. The software allows for collection of citation and references for all the literature that was used to enable them to be inserted into the document and formatted as per the citation style preferred.

 

A free Mendeley account allows:

  • 2GB personal storage for personal documents
  • Permission to create 5 private groups of up to 25 collaborators for sharing common documents.
  • 100 MB shared web storage across all groups. 

Why Mendeley?

Reasons to choose Mendeley:

  • It allows for the importation of your saved  papers and other documents from different media,  or websites quickly and easily. Mendeley automatically captures author, title and publisher information.
  • Mendeley allows for secure access to saved documents on any computer through the desktop client, web browser, or using your mobile app. Your library is backed up in the cloud when you sync and is always available to you.
  • It has annotation capabilities which allows for easy addition of one's thoughts on documents in one's library, even from mobile devices. For ease of collaboration, the software also allows for sharing of documents with groups of colleagues and annotate them together.
  • Mendeley allows for generation of citations and bibliographies in a whole range of journal styles with just a few clicks. It has a citation plugin which is compatible with Word (including Word for Mac) and LibreOffice. Also supported are BibTeX export for use with LaTeX.

Getting started

  1. Get started by creating a Free Mendeley account.
  2. Download the Mendeley Reference Manager which allows you to easily organize and search your personal library, annotate documents and cite as you write.
  3. Download Mendeley Cite. It makes for easy creation of citation and references. It allows the user to cite as they write and it is compatible with Word (including Word for Mac) and LibreOffice. 
  4. Download Mendeley Web Importer. The web imported allows for importation of papers, web pages and other documents directly into your reference library from search engines and academic databases. Mendeley Web Importer is available for all major web browsers.

Uploading documents to the library

There are several ways you can add references and files to your Mendeley Library:

  • Drag and drop files from your machine.
  • Use the 'Add' button.
  • Create entry manually.
  • Import library data exported from other Reference managers.
  • Using the Mendeley Web Importer.

Mendeley Cite

Mendeley Cite allows for quick and easy citation of materials that have been added into the Menedeley library and to generate a full reference list of all the materials that were referred to.

  • Mendeley Cite is a free, simple add-in for Microsoft Word versions 2016 and above, with the Microsoft Word app for iPad® and with Microsoft Word Online.
  • It allows for quick and easy insertion of citations and references to materials in the Mendeley library.
  • It allows for automatic generation reference list of all the materials cited.
  • Change to any of your preferred citation styles in just a few clicks.

Important Note

Mendeley does not support the option for citing in the form author (year) in documents, it generates citations in (author, year) format. In order to cite in author (year) format, the software allows for manual editing of the citation generated in order to achieve the formating.

Library Training & Support

The University Libraries offer Mendeley training sessions for University faculty, staff and students. These sessions can either be group or one-on-one sessions. Please consult the Client Services Librarians for further assistance on Mendeley training or refer to the advertised training sessions from time-to-time.

The training sessions cover:

  • Mendeley account creation
  • Exporting citations to Mendeley
  • Using Mendeley citation plugin,  
  • Creating and formatting bibliographies of citations.
