Open Access Explained

Benefits of Open Access (Sources: SPARC, righttoresearch, Kingsley & Brown 2012)

According to the Budapest Open Access Initiative (2012: np.), open access refers to the free availability of scholarly output on the public Internet domain permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these materials, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers. The open access movement advocates for provision of free and full access to research output to the public at large through encouraging publishing in open access journals and  uploading research output onto open access institutional repositories.

Creative Commons (CC) licenses offer a standardized way for all creators (individuals or institutions) to allow the public permission to use their creative work under copyright law. There are six different CC licenses which are intended to give creators a range of options. Deciding on which license to use should be guided by the intentions for sharing such work and how users will benefit from it.

  1. CC BY : Under this license, the users can copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format and duly give appropriate credit to the creators of such material. The license allows for commercial use.
  2. CC BY-SA: The license allows for distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format and appropriately give credit to the creator. If the user makes any modifications or additions to the material, the contributions should be distributed under the same conditions as the original. The license allows for commercial use as well.
  3. CC BY-NC: The license allows for distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for non-commercial use only and appropriately give credit to the creator.
  4. CC BY-NC-SA: The license allows for distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for non-commercial use only and appropriately give credit to the creator. 5. CC BY-ND: The license allows for commercial use and the users can copy and distribute the material in any medium or format and give credit to the creators. The license does not permit for derivatives or adaptations of the work.
